FAQ : Using the SDS E-Learning Platform

This page contains a list of general questions you may ask about using this site.

What is an E-Learning Platform?

Our E-Learning Platform is a web based Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), where you can access learning materials, complete activities and communicate with your supervisor/tutor and other participants. Our e-learning platform is a web site so it is available wherever there is an Internet connection.

The SDS e-learning platform contains a number of courses. Each course is different depending on the needs of the course participants. Courses can contain text information, links to resources, discussion forums, quizzes, questionnaires and other activities.

Finding your way around

Finding your way around this site is very simple. We recommend that you use the in-built navigation rather than using your internet browser navigation (forward and back arrows) as this may sometimes result in you exiting the SDS e-learning platform unexpectedly.

The breadcrumbs, located directly below the banner, show where you are and how you got there. Use the breadcrumbs to navigate back to other areas.

You can also use the Navigation block on the left to navigate to different sections of the site.

What are blocks?

Blocks are items that appear in the column on the left. Blocks display additional activities and functionality for your course and may vary from course to course. Some examples of blocks include:

  • Activities
  • Calendar
  • Navigation
  • Recent activity

How do I change my password?

If you haven’t already done so you should reset your password from the default before accessing your courses. Your password should be kept secure; you can change your password at any time.

To change your password you will need to go to your Public profile page. To get there, do one of the following:

  1. In the Settings block, select My profile settings - Change password

On your Change password page:

  1. Enter your current password into the first text box
  2. Enter your new password into the second text box
  3. Re-enter your new password into the third text box

What is 'My Profile'?

Every user in Moodle has a public profile. This contains information about you that is visible to people who are in the same e-learning platform course as you. You can edit your profile and choose what other people can or cannot see.

To edit your profile you will need to go to the Settings block and select My profile settings - Edit profile.

On your Public profile page:

  1. Change the information you want
    • The Description text box enables you to enter some text about yourself which will then be displayed on your profile page for others to view.
    • Required fields are indicated by red text and an asterisk.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Update profile.
